Change default transcoder for .ts files

Post by LarsGertsen »

Hi,

I have Media Portal media center and WMS running on the same PC.

I get tv-recordings from MediaPortal - these .ts files are saved to one of WMS's movie-directories, so I can use WMS to stream them to my Sony EX501 tv. However my Sony tv do not recognize the .ts files (File is not available (the error message is in danish so this is my translation)).

I found out that if I right-click a .ts file and change the transcode to e.g. TsMuxer then it will play on my tv.

so my question is:
How do I change this for all existing and new .ts files whics is saved to the directory?
E.g. I want to set a new default transcoder for .ts files

Hi,

Adding a transcoder profile for a file-type don't do the trick.

Should I change the mime-type or dlna type?

Hi,
TS media (MPEG Transport Stream) contains MPEG-2 (ISO/IEC 13818) audio and video streams and usually doesn't need to be transcoded because Sony does support these formats natively. There are some exceptions however as MPEG-2 Part 7 Audio (Advanced Audio Coding - AAC) when media has to be transcoded. Or at least one of the streams. tsMuxer profile does the following:
  • looks what's inside the media and whether there is a need transcoding of video and/or audio to take place
  • after trancoding it or NOT tsMuxer profile encapsulates the media in M2TS (AVCHD) container
So what?
  1. Make sure you've selected the correct device profile for your TV
  2. Check that TS is listed under natively supported MIMEs (in the same settings section as previous)
  3. Check Media Portal settings and note your output format (audio/video coding)
  4. If all above has been done correctly but still doesn't work post a MediaInfo file properties report for the media (right mouse click on it). This will give some clues how to proceed further on
Hope the information helps.

Hi,

Thank you for your thorough reply but it do not answer my question. (I can see that I was a bit unclear in my last post :( ).

If I by hand change the transcoder for a .ts file (e.g. to *VCL* (can’t remember the exact name)) I can play the file on my Sony TV. However I don’t want to do that every time a new .ts file is added to the directory.
It seemed correct that adding a transcoder profile for the .ts file-type should work, but my new files still had the “Movies” transcoder profile set.
So either the transcoder profile should be set elsewhere as well or I should do some other thing to make it work (reboot?)

Hope this explanation is more clear than my last post.

Hi Lars,
I was trying to explain that probably you don't need to transcode TS files by setting a particular profile. I record DVB content on a regular basis and use TS as target container. My video and audio coding is MPEG-2 and my Sony plays all these recordings without transcoding thus having the smallest possible CPU impact.
Please, take a look at my 4th suggestion and post here the information from MediaInfo. It will help to determine whether you need transcoding or there is an issue with the WMS settings. The other option is to place one of your recordings on a USB flash, plug it into the TV and try to play it directly. This will tell you whether your TV recognize the media and if so you simply have to setup WMS accordingly.

Hi,

I tried to play a .ts file from a usb on my Sony KLD 40EX501, but if could not recognize it.
I tried to change the extension to mpg and now it could find it but it could not play it.

I add the MediaInfo for the .ts files:

They appear to be identical with yours and that’s confusing.

Check the following:
Settings -> Server -> The list of authorized client devices -> [YOUR TV] -> Edit -> Settings:
  1. What’s the type of your device? It should be “Sony TV (DLNA, 16:9, 1920x1080)”
  2. What are movie types listed under “Embedded file support”? TS should be listed there.
  3. Press the big “File types” button. What are the MIME and DLNA types for TS extension? They should be “video/vnd.dlna.mpeg-tts” and MPEG_TS_SD_EU_ISO respectively.
  4. While in “Registration of media resources files” select TS and press EDIT button. Here you could set values in accordance with previous statement. Also you could set a transcoding profile (tsMuxer) for all TS files for this particular device.
Hope this helps.

Hi,

My dlna type was: AVC_TS_HD_24_AC3 both for .ts and m2ts

It seems to work with your sugestions.

Thanks
