BDP S370 AVI files rename to mp4 can transcode

Using a sony BDP S370
This product is awesome, the PS3 media server can't even transcode to this BluRay player!

Using AVI files I have to rename to mp4 can transcode at all.

1. I have several media files .avi that are actually XVID or DVIX mpeg4. I have to either rename these files to .mp4 or change the mine type to video/mp4 and change the DNLA to be the to be the same as a MP4.
I can understand that they are actually mp4 files but to make it easy for the non geeks in the house I have them named as .avi

2. also I have a few files that are in the same format , but only get audio.

3. In every case I have to choose transcode instead of ORIGINAL to play these files.

Any clues?
