MKV stutters/restarts when using SRT subs and AV-transcd=off

Post by pvdossel »

Now I finally hoped to play my HD MKV files properly after struggling with the no-audio issue. And then I'm into my next (and hopefully last) issue.

Problem Description:

I have a 1080p MKV movie with AC3 audio that streams perfectly from my PC to Philips TV. In order to do this I have to set the transcoding off (I do this by selecting "clear profile" in the transcoding profile of the movie).

Now I have added an SRT subtitle in the same directory as the movie. And this is where the problem starts...

Because my Philips TV's does not support subtitles, I have to set the parameter "Always perform transcoding when subtitles are found" in my Media device setting.

The movie starts to play perfectly with subtitle for the first minute or so, but then suddenly the movie starts to stutter (temporary directory shows it is transcoding again). This symptom will start repeating itself 2 or 3 times every 10 seconds or so. Then the movie suddenly restarts from scratch.

Removing the SRT will immediately solve the issue, but that is not what I want.

How can I display my subtitles without having to transcode audio/video?

I'm sure that if I get this to work, I will be the happiest man on this forum!

Connect your TV to your PC via HDMI or WiFi Media Connect.

So you are saying that displaying subtitles without having to transcode video and audio is not possible?
That is too bad

If the device does not support subtitles, then yes, it is impossible.

Then how come my old XBOX with XBMC is able to display SRT titles on my TV without transcoding it? (unfortunately XBMC does not support MKV).

If XBMC supports MPEG Transport Stream, with TsMuxerGUI (http://www.smlabs.net/tsmuxer.html) you can convert mkv to ts-format without transcoding video. I'm not sure that XBMC supports subtitles via UPnP, but maybe they will work via Network Shared Folders.
