Hello,
By default WMS used GdiPlus for image processing and I have no problem with very large photos (http://www.flickr.com/groups/veryverylargephotos/).
Settings - Devices - "The list of authorized network connections" - choose a device - Settings - Transcoder - "Files, subtitles" - Transcoding file parameters - Photo - clear the field "Transcoding profile"
Check the field "The maximum number of pixels in photos" (Settings - Devices - "The list of authorized network connections" - choose a device - Settings - "Embedded file support")
